A few days ago, a big box arrived containing our very first ever Lucis Via: Catholic Young Adults of Greenville t-shirts. The journey to their arrival was a fun one and we owe a debt of gratitude to so many folks! A huge thank you to Nicole Romano, member and graphic designer, for volunteering to transform (many) ideas into a beautiful visual concept. Support her firm, NR Graphic Designs, by clicking here. Also, we appreciate so much the LVG Leadership Team for their guidance/advice, the members who voted for their favorite color (especially those who voted with such gusto hourly for the charcoal color to win), and everyone who has either purchased a shirt ($5) or played in our contests to win one.
Why did we pick this design? Be Bold. Be Passionate. Be Catholic. is the tagline of our young adult ministry. This ministry was founded on April 4, 2012 uniting all the individual parish-based young adults groups across the Greenville area. Thus, all of our local parishes are listed! For anyone interested in learning more about us, our website is a reference.
The [brief] history of why we’re named Lucis Via: In 2011, Valerie Soop (previous Associate Director of Young Adult Ministry for the Diocese of Charleston) encouraged parish-based young adult groups in an area to merge into 1 (for the sake of improved stability and longevity), the group forming in Charleston got together to come up with a name. When Greenville had an option to select a name, this one resonated with us. This is what Charleston said:
We had an outstanding starting place – a clear picture of who we are striving to be and what we desire to achieve as a community of young Catholics. Our mission: to propose Jesus Christ to the world through fellowship, prayer, worship, scripture study, growth in the Catholic faith, discussion, charitable outreach, social activities, and so much more. We are a group of Catholic young adults who aim to support one another in our individual quests to seek and follow God’s will in our lives, to learn more about our beautiful faith, and to encourage one another to grow in holiness, as well as our relationship with Christ. The question remained: how to express all this in a name?
Lucis Via is a Latin phrase meaning ‘The Way of Light.’ In John 14:6, Jesus says, “I AM the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” The earliest of Christians took Jesus’ words and used them to form their identity, calling themselves the followers of the Way. In John 8:12, Jesus says, “I AM the light of the world; whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the Light of lights.” Combining these two verses where Jesus calls himself Way and Light, we get the Way of Light. Translated into the language of the Church (Latin), this becomes Lucis Via. We feel that this beautifully expresses our mission: to propose Christ, the Way of Light, to the world.
T-shirts are available for purchase ($5) at many of our events or contact email@example.com. Please try to have exact change. Monitor social media (Instagram & Facebook) and attend events for chances to win a shirt for free. We already have 3 t-shirt winners!
